6- Singapore: Singapore Slinging

For the next part of our trip, we hopped on a bus and crossed into Singapore for the weekend. Free accommodation and a catchup with friends being the incentive. We visited here four years ago on our way to Australia for the same reason and did a lot of the touristy items. So in other words Donagh is the bookends for our time in Australia.

Singapore’s a super clean, super efficient city. Very developed four years ago, even more developed now. Took a nice walk through the city, the highlight being the Marina Bay Sands hotel, which looks over one side of the city. To visit the top is $50 and to use the infinity pool at the top you need to stay the night which is ~$500, unfortunately not on our budget. Maybe on the next round the world trip!

As we commuted through Singapore we noticed that they now have loads of TVs in the carriages, most of which play bizarre cartoons with weird jingles on repeat for the journey. We were highly entertained by them but I’m sure if you had to listen to them a few times a day, the novelty would quickly wear off. On closer examination we realized that these cartoons and characters were created especially to teach Singaporeans how to behave on trains or in our terms, how to have manners! So without further ado, I present the stars of these cartoons
* Move in Martin (i.e. move further into the train to allow more passengers on)
* Bag Down Benny (i.e. put your bag down on the ground so you don’t hit anybody with it)
* Give Way Glenda (i.e. give way to passengers leaving the train)
* Stand up Stacey (i.e. stand up and give your seat to someone who needs it)
* Hush Hush Hannah (i.e. please shut those annoying cartoon characters up….. or maybe not!)

By luck or design our timing coincided with a Christmas party for Donagh, MF and their friends. Thankfully they had costumes ready for us so that we could partake. Lucky us! What lovely little elves we make.

As Singapore is so cosmopolitan it’s home to some more great food, fell off the travelling bandwagon in the company of Donagh and MF- beautiful steak on Friday night (budget, what budget!) and then on the Sunday at a famous Indian restaurant. No plates, just good food served to you on a banana leaf. Sure why not!

And so we leave Singapore after another too short trip and head for Japan to introduce ourselves to sumo, samurai and sake.

Our route: Bus from Melaka to Singapore, fly Singapore to Tokyo
